What Can I Bring to The Table At Selwyn

What Can I Bring to The Table At Selwyn

Selwyn College is a really well established school. I don’t think I can bring all that much to Selwyn because they mainly revolve around intelligence and sometimes sport. The main thing I’m alright at is Maths, because it is my favourite subject at school. On the sports side of things I could be a very worthy adversary or team mate.

When I play sports I get very competitive and very aggressive because I always want to win. I am usually very loud when I play games, especially when people aren't playing as well as they can. I don’t have the brains like my brother but I am really handy with carrying and moving stuff (Body Builder)...

I’m not going to lie when it comes to being smart but I'm just above average, not average at everything, because to be honest, I am quite smart at Maths. I have alright scores and try my best when I do something. I always take something away from my learning with my friends.

The main thing I like to do is chill with my friends and play sports but I do manage to get my work finished when I get asked to. I always try my hardest to get my work done before the deadline but during that time I get kind of scared because I think I won’t get it done in time or I mucked up.

When there is something important happening or I try and get my work rushed I get kind of nervous and stressed out I’m usually able to keep my nervousness and stress under wraps because I am antisocial around family members I don’t know.

I’m not special, I'm not good at everything but no matter how hard or how sticky a situation is, I will always persevere and be resilient. This is why I will be an asset to my new school, Selwyn College.

Early Maori Enterprise

Normal

Enterprise is not new to NZ, it has been around for a very long time. Early Maori often traded between hapu and iwi. When settler ships arrived they too traded with the local iwi. Often these trades were unfair with one side getting a much better bargain. This helps to explain why by the 1900s, Maori had signed over the ownership of their land.

10 Syllables (Re-make)

Enterprise is not new to New Zealand. Early Maori traded between each other. The british sailed to new zealand to trade. Maoris got ripped off by the settlers. The Maoris lost their land to the british.

what we did is we wrote a short 5 sentences about enterprise and when it started and who it comes into our everyday life. Then after we did that we made our sentences only 10 Syllables.

Water Filters

This week and last week for inquiry LS2 was learning about water filters and how to make them, we needed to find out what water filters need to work and how we could put the filters together.  All of the groups used plastic bottles, sand, rocks and charcoal to try and dilute dirty water. Although none of the groups completely filtered the water, some of them managed to get lighter coloured water.

Rugby Pitch Sizes Maths Challenge

This week for maths another challenge was to answer questions on rugby pitch sizes. Some of the other questions were: What is the perimeter of a maximum size of rugby pitch? And, what is the area of a maximum size rugby pitch? After finishing all of the other questions, my group needed to create a DLO on how we found our answer.

RWC Maths

This week LS2 has been learning about the rugby world cup. We needed to answer maths questions like; What is the difference in seating capacity between the largest and smallest stadiums and, what the the total combined capacity of all the Japanese rugby world cup stadiums is. The question that my group made the DLO on is if all the stadia are sold out each time then what will be the total number of spectators for all the pool matches combined.

5-7-10 | My Favourite Cultural Celebration (Christmas)

(Christmas)

Let me tell you about my Favourite Cultural Celebration CHRISTMAS

Christmas, isn’t it a jolly time spending time with your uncles, aunts, Mum, Dad and siblings. I love christmas, so when the year starts I can’t wait for it. Just the joy and smiles of everyone around you and the wonderful, amazing, awesome gifts that your folks give you. Although I know christmas will come, the excitement inside me just keeps building up.

I am thankful to live in Panmure, New Zealand because you have a majority of things you can choose like toys and candy. Like every year it is on December 25 but this year it is December 25, 2019.

When I was 7 I found out that Santa wasn’t real and it hasn’t felt the same since then. When I did believe he was real I thought he was my friend, Santa, who liked cookies and milk. I know that people say that Santa isn’t real, yet there is a little bit of hope that Santa is still real but is locked up at area 51. *Help him by going on the Area 51 raid September 20, 2019 see you there Nevada, United States of America*

I could remember his famous catch phrase “Ho Ho Ho,” he would go around saying.
_______________________________________________________

We have been looking at using commas in the right context. This was a really fun activity for me. I like the way that we used the commas. They way we did it is we did a 5-7-10. 5 minutes to write, 7 minutes to talk about the writing and the 10 minutes were for the rest of the writing. It was also quite challenging because I don't use commas a lot.

Current Events Map

This week for reading Aung Naing, Joseph, Jack, Alex and I worked together to fill out a google map with international events. We needed to search through different news websites to find stories that fit the current event criteria. Our story for oddity is twin pandas being born in Belgium and for impact, bush fires.

Maths: Krispy Kreme Maths Challenge

This week for maths, the Heptagons, and Octagons were given a maths challenge. This challenge included 1 ginormous Krispy Kreme's donut box. Our challenge was to make an estimation of how many donuts were in the box. What we were given was a link to an email screenshot which showed a few of the hints we needed to be able to figure it out. This included the diameter of each donut, the length and height of the box, and a good luck to schools trying to figure the answer out. For this activity I worked with Jack, and we had just as much fun creating the DLO as we did with finding the answer. You can see in our DLO our first estimations just by looking at the box, and the working out for the real answer.

Provocation And Opinion

A provocation is an action or speech that triggers strong feelings about a topic. Recently a major supermarket chain announced that it will no longer sell energy drink to people under the age of 16. My group's opinion is recorded in my DLO that also shows both perspectives. What is your opinion and why?

Exploring Our National Current Events

News editors make decisions everyday about which current event stories they will run. We explored the different types of current events that are happening in NZ, thought about why the story made the news and plotted the location on a google map. We were trying to find different types of current events.

Explanation: Should New Zealand Ban Plastic Straws?

Why?... Just why do you want to ban plastic straw just because of a few videos of straws harming animals it is not our fault that sea creatures think that straws are food. Why should people that throw their things in the bin have to suffer and get their relaxing straws get ban. I would destroy the world if we were out at the beach and just because we didn’t have a straw someone liped my drink I would flip out.

My reason for saying no is because it is just a waste of time, money and resources. There are other plastic things that are worse than plastic straws and the fuss over plastic straws people are just being dramatic. Everything in everyday life is bad and can pillout the world, you don’t see people trying to ban them just because they help out with their daily life. The people that are trying to help with the plastic straw ban are just wasting time and money. The only reason that people are making this fuss is because of the videos of straws in turtle’s noses.

My second reason for saying no people banning straws is because of all the money that would have to be invested for this act when all the money in it.

No we shouldn't ban plastic straws because of sea creatures eating them or getting them stuck in their nose we should ban littering that is a bigger threat to the environment and everything inside it it's not the straws fault it is ours.

Should New zealand Ban plastic straws

Today we were debating on whether we ban plastic straws or we keep plastic straws. My partner was
Te Pounamu and while we were looking at the suffering creatures we understood that there are things that are harming the marine life. Plastic straws can get stuck in turtle's noses and in bird's mouths, not only do they biodegrade into harmful microscopic pieces of plastic get stuck in animal's stomachs, plastic releases toxins that can pollute lakes and and the ground. That's why I don't think we should have plastic straws anymore, paper and bamboo ones are far better for the environment.

Tech

Today at tech we were cooking fish cakes and they were nice for a while then the taste of the fish got boring and the only thing that made me go for more was the spice of the fish and to be honest it was kind of nice and that was surprising because I don't like seafood that much. My favorite cooking session would have to be when we cooked chop suey that was really fun and nice. It was boring sometimes because we weren't cooking it was fun for a little while then got boring because of the paperwork but I just want to thank all the teachers for teaching us and also a big thanks to Miss heka because she took time out of looking after her child to teach us how cook so thank you to all the teachers at tamaki college.

Persuasive Writing

Writing Frame for organising a Persuasive Speech

LI: To write a speech and persuade others to think the way you do.

Just imagine in 5-7 years the Earth would be uninhabitable due to all the pollution in the air.

Hello my name is Julian and I believe that eco friendly cars should be the only cars that

inhabit the roads for a better future, for the earth, mankind and also for all the children who are

still to come (in the future) . If this were to happen it would restore my faith in mankind.

According to my calculations, about 40% of the world owns gasoline run cars and that is the

reason the earth is being corrupted. Some people are suffering because of all of the

pollution in the air and all that pollution is from our creations of cars that are ruining the earth.

The internet states that India has the most pollution in the world. In 2018 Gurugram was known

worldwide as the most polluted place on the planet because of the use of a lot of steam

engines and non environmentally friendly cars that pollute the Earth.

The oil that cars use sometimes get shipped and the ship sometimes crash, the oil cause

harm to fish, birds, penguins and other marine creatures. It could also endanger the physical

health of anyone because of the chemicals that the oil contains.

We have neglected, we have rejected and we have been in denial. We neject to think we were

wrong, stick to our own knowledge because no matter what you think all humans are a bit

stubborn, a bit selfish and a bit greedy.

Yeah I know cars help us with day to day jobs and work, but just think for a while if the earth

had feelings how would it feel? If we go to the future and don’t change our ways what would

the earth look like? How do you think we could make a change?

Swimming

At swimming we were learning how to swim in a river to protect us while swimming, it's so we don't end up killing ourselves by accident. Would you rather have a broken foot or a broken head was the quotation we were asked at the end of the lesson. After we learnt how to swim in the water, we were asked to swim around the pool numeris times but with different styles of swimming. I found this quite fun as there are a large majority of swimming styles that I could use in different situations.

Tech: Returning To Tech For Term 3

Today we had our first session of tech for term 3 this year. Unfortunately Miss Heka was not here today so instead Miss Elice was here to give us worksheets to fill out. The worksheet was about Greece and the history of food there. We started by reading a few pages that gave us a bunch of information about the topic. Then we got our first few questions. After that there were a few pages which all contained a word find. That was as far as we got into the worksheets, there were still a few pages remaining, but I managed to complete 1 word find in the time we were given. Although we couldn't do cooking I still had fun

Kiwi Can

At kiwi Can this week we were working on our emotion and resilience. we were talking about the different effects that can happen to you when an emotions is being felt or shown. It was a really interesting  talking about feelings and the different effects of different feelings. We then started playing our energizer and we were doing exercises and giving each other high fives. Then we were talking about what can happen when you feel a certain feeling. After that we were doing role play and they had to try and guess what we were doing my group was at the zoo but we weren't allowed to talk.

Tech - Food

For tech today we completed our last session for Term 2. with our teacher Mrs Heka, who takes care of food tech show us how to cook traditional food queasiness. Today we cooked Chop Suey from the Samoan culture. This rotations theme is all about cultural food. Since there wasn't an equal amount of students in food class, My group : Jack and I. Each person had their own roles to complete. Jack and I worked together to make sure that the food was done properly, and that the main ingredients were prepared to be added in, while i was dicing the onion, chicken, and garlic. The equipment that we used from our trolley was: medium bowl, measuring cups/spoons, knives, Yellow and green cutting board, big pot, strainer, fork, and serving spoon. The ingredients were: mixed veges, chicken, soy sauce, boiling water, oil, vermicelli, and salt. We were told to remove the pot from the heat every 2 minutes, because of the stickiness from the chicken and vermicelli. At the end of the session, as always we cleansed down our top/bottom benches, especially the stoves/cum tray. While we were cooking our chop suey, Mrs Heka was getting the rice prepared and then we dished it which looked so deliciously delicious.

HIIT

Today we were doing HIIT and we first started up with some warm ups so what we did for our warm ups was we got a partner and then we had to touch the other person's shoulder only with our left hands but we also had punishments such as power lunges burpees planks. Then we were going through circuits that would help us build our strength and also increase our heart rates. We were doing pull ups, push ups and mountain climbers then we did bring sally up while doing squats and it was really hard then at the very end we had to get into partners and do some stretches.

Maths Word Problems

Today we were showcasing and explaining our math games that we have been working on for two weeks. The first things we did to create our games was we planned out what the design of the layout would look like and what we would do if someone got the answer correct or wrong we also created some characters that would give you a hint of you were correct or wrong and also something that says congratulations if you got it right and / or sorry try again this was a very interesting activity to end the term because we got to create our own games instead of playing something straight from the internet that someone else made. This gave us a big opportunity to show our skill and also our knowledge.
